Does endocan level increase in women with polycystic ovary syndrome? A case — control study

Abstract: Objectives: To evaluate endocan levels of patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in comparison to healthy women. Material and methods: A cross-sectional case-control study on 88 patients with PCOS (mean age, 22.06 ± 4.24 years; body mass index [BMI], 23.9 ± 4.74 kg/m 2) and 87 age-and BMI-matched healthy women (mean age, 23.71 ± 4.42 years; BMI, 22.15 ± 3.03 kg/m 2). Results: Serum endocan level was significantly higher in PCOS group than control group (540.9 ± 280.3 pg/mL vs. 355.5 ± 233.5 pg/mL, resp… Show more

“…Our findings are opposite to previous reports of the inverse association between endocan level and traditional obesity indexes, BMI and/or WC (12)(13)(14)(15). The possible discrepancies in such results may be explained with the age and sex differences, as well as different ethnic groups that previous studies included.…”

“…However, there are discordant results about relationship between serum endocan level and obesity. Namely, some studies reported lower endocan levels in the obese state (11), as well as an inverse association between circulating level of endocan and the most commonly used obesity indices, such as body mass index (BMI) (12)(13)(14) and waist circumference (WC) (15) in different population groups. Contrary to this, the others showed the positive association between circulating endocan level and mentioned obesity indices, BMI (16 -18) and WC (18).…”

“…However, the existing data regarding the association between endocan and obesity are controversial. While some studies have shown higher endocan levels in obesity [ 6 ] and a positive correlation between anthropometric measurements of both overall obesity (i.e., body mass index (BMI)) [ 10 , 14 , 15 ] and abdominal obesity (i.e., waist circumference (WC)) [ 10 ], others have reported the opposite, i.e., lower endocan levels in obesity [ 16 ] and a negative association with the anthropometric indices [ 17 , 18 , 19 ]. Such controversies might be attributed to the different ethnic groups studied, the phenotypes of adiposity, the duration and extent of obesity, and the sample size of the studied population.…”

“…Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrinological disease that aff ects 6-18% of women of reproductive age and has a wide range of metabolic eff ects. 1,2 It is the most common cause of infertility in women. 3 Th e main clinical features of PCOS are ovulatory dysfunction and hyperandrogenism, and these fi ndings may persist throughout the reproductive period.…”

“…In these studies, endocan levels in PCOS, as in other chronic diseases, were found to be higher than healthy control groups. 1,13,16,[18][19][20] Th e aim of this study is to compare the endocan level in PCOS patients with the healthy control group and to show the relationship between some cardiovascular risk indicators accompanying PCOS and endocan level.…”
