Abstract:Extensive reading is reading as much as possible, for one's own pleasure, at a difficulty level at which one can read smoothly and quickly. In the domain of reading, this paper investigates the effect of extensive reading from e-books, through utilizing a number of downloadable reading application programs on the students' e-devices, as opposed to traditional book-reading in an ESL context. It aims at providing answers as to how e-book reading affects the students' reading rate, their reading comprehension, an… Show more

In the context of teaching language, a suitable teaching approach in the classroom affects teaching reading to language learners to be successful. The extensive reading can be used as an alternative approach to teach reading which provides many advantages for language learners specially to foster their reading skills. Many researchers have been conducted the extensive reading study, however, the majority of existing studies about the solution to teach language using extensive reading does not appear to be helpful to find students’ preference from the component of extensive reading. Therefore, this present qualitative study attempts to explore students’ preferences in the component of extensive reading. The findings present that the highest students' preference from the component of extensive reading is easy reading. Meanwhile, the smallest students’ preference from the component of extensive reading is about teacher orientation & guide. A future researcher is suggested to study extensive reading in other aspects besides exploring students' preference to increase the quality of next extensive reading implication to be better.

“…One of products of such technology integration in instructional design is e-books. E-books, in English language teaching context, help both learners and teachers to have an interactive teaching and learning environment that triggers learning motivation (Almunawaroh, 2020), develop learners" reading comprehension (Yow & Priyashri, 2019) and listening comprehension (Hsieh & Huang, 2020), increase learners" reading speed (Akbar, Taqi, Dashti, & Sadeq, 2015), and accelerating vocabulary (Leacox & Jackson, 2014).…”
An e-book is one type of instructional materials that play important roles to ensure learning interactivity by integrating technology to its context. However, studies on the integration of an e-book in English language teaching mostly focus on its implementation process, not its developing process which in fact may influence the validity quality of an e-book. Thus, this study aims to use expert’s review to develop an e-book with past tenses materials for students of English study program. Development research design proposed by Akker was used to develop the e-book. Expert’s reviews on the past tenses materials and the e-book media design were used to determine the validity of the e-book. The results showed that the e-book with past tenses materials was valid which indicated that it can be employed in teaching and learning simple past tense and past continuous to the students of English education study program.
“…In a recent study, Akbar et al (2015) surveyed 40 freshman female students studying in the College of Basic Education in the English department, PAAET, Kuwait. Data drawn from students' writing diaries together with two questionnaires were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively.…”

“…Spencer (2006) reported negative aspects of e-reading in an academic setting. Akbar, Taqi, Dashti, and Sadeq (2015) investigated e-reading usage as opposed to traditional book reading in Kuwait and highlighted the fact that e-reading may accelerate students' reading rate and progress, but they also cautioned that there might be a lower level of comprehension when reading e-resources. The authors concluded that students' attitudes toward e-reading tended to be less positive than toward conventional book reading.…”
Reading is important for students by contributing significantly to success in their studies and their career development. A questionnaire-based survey was conducted in the English Department of the College of Basic Education, Public Authority for Applied Education and Training (PAAET), in Kuwait. Based on 410 responses of EFL college students in Kuwait on their reading practices, it was found that students read mainly for entertainment, and reading does not appear to be a popular activity among students. Fiction, fashion, and best sellers were the three main types of reading, indicating that academic reading was not a priority. Only a small proportion of students used e-books. Most students perceived such features of e-books as their portability and ability to store more information as likely to attract more students to e-reading, and indicated that they would be attracted to reading e-books themselves if circumstances change. This indicates a good potential to promote e-reading among students if steps are taken to make e-books and e-readers available to them through libraries and academic institutions. E-reading is also expected to become more popular among students if it could be linked to academic reading, particularly to the availability of text books in e-format. Libraries in Kuwait should start more proactive program to promote e-books and e-reading among college and university students.
