Does Diversity Erode Social Cohesion? Conceptual and Methodological Issues

Abstract: Robert Putnam's 'hunkering down' thesis regarding the negative effect of ethnic diversity on trust and willingness to participate in collective life launched an ongoing debate concerning the ramifications of diversity for social cohesion. Findings regarding the way in which diversity affects social cohesion are discrepant, some scholars arguing that diversity has negative effects on social cohesion and others indicating insignificant or even positive effects. This study claims that these conflicting conclusions… Show more

“…Generally, we also need indicators of perceived shared values. Finally, as argued above and previously, many of the diverging findings in the literature on diversity and social cohesion may not only reflect different conceptions, measures and methods (Ariely 2014; van der Meer and Tolsma 2014) but also that communities and the ways in which they are conceived differ across contexts. Such a perspective supports the idea that community values and national identities are at least partly political phenomena, with different consequences for social cohesion.…”

“…Despite this neglect in the study of community attachment over time, heterogeneity is an important dimension of community life that affects numerous social goods, including trust, reciprocity, and volunteerism. In particular, research on community life has focused on race and ethnicity, generally finding that, for example, greater levels of racial and ethnic heterogeneity hurt community life in terms of trust and reciprocity (e.g., Putnam ), participation in social activities (Alesina and La Ferrara ), volunteering and organizational membership (Costa and Kahn ), and social solidarity (Ariely ).…”

“…There is some evidence that diversity reduces social cohesion (Meer & Tolsma, ) and this seems especially true where diversity is found in conjunction with deprivation (Cooper & Innes, ). However, it is important to note that diversity and cohesion levels are not always related in a simple manner, and that cohesion has the opportunity to be affected both positively and negatively, and by more than just ethnic or economic diversity (Ariely, ). Potentially, high diversity may have net positive impacts in terms of multiculturalism and the disruption of embedded cultural processes, despite negative impacts in other areas.…”
