* Autor correspondente: guilirous@yahoo.ca RESUMO O Centro de Endemismo Belém (CEB) -região biogeográfica localizada entre os rios Tocantins e Pindaré-é a área mais desmatada da Amazônia. Estudar a biota do solo dos remanescentes florestais e de áreas em regeneração (capoeiras) do CEB é fundamental para promover práticas agrícolas mais sustentáveis e orientar ações de restauração de áreas degradadas. Dessa forma, o objetivo desse estudo foi identificar os principais determinantes da composição e da diversidade dos grandes táxons de macrofauna do solo (uso atual do solo, núcleos geográficos, histórico de uso, freqüência de fogo) em uma cronoseqüência de capoeiras e florestas no CEB. A macrofauna foi amostrada em oito áreas de capoeiras baixas (4-7 anos), seis áreas de capoeiras médias (11-15 anos), sete áreas de capoeiras altas (20-40 anos), oito áreas de remanescentes de florestas e três áreas de pastagem. Sua composição e diversidade foi estudada através de Análises de Componentes Principais e Entre-classes. Um total de 9.225 indivíduos pertencentes a 29 grandes taxóns (ordens ou famílias) foram coletados nas 32 parcelas amostradas. A composição da macrofauna se mostrou sensível ao efeito do histórico de uso do solo e identificou comunidades significativamente distintas entre as micro-regiões, havendo nessa escala efeito da cronosequência de capoeiras e florestas. A intensidade do uso do solo levou a redução da abundância e da riqueza de predadores, indicando alterações significativas no funcionamento do solo. Esses resultados mostram um efeito duradouro da degradação sobre a macrofauna do solo e conseqüentemente sobre suas funções ecológicas. Aim of study: We study the abundance of Enoicyla pusilla (Burmeister) in pine plantations and the effects of silvicultural thinning on insect population. This species is considered a rare member of the order Trichoptera, reported as absent or occasional in conifer forests. It has been suggested that the proliferation of conifer plantations may be a threat for this species by favoring population isolation.Area of study: Plantations of native and non-native pines in Galicia (NW of Spain). Material and methods:We used different traps systems, including 28 pitfall traps, to compared populations of insects in 14 thinned and unthinned plots of Pinus pinaster and P. radiata distributed across 3 forest stands. Traps were checked every 15 days during one year.Main results: We caught 1.219 larvae of E. pusilla. It was the third most abundant species captured in pitfall traps. Larval activity extended from January to late July. They were more abundant in the stands of P. radiata, probably because the denser foliage produced limits sunlight and helped to maintain litter moisture. Additionally needles of P. radiata had lower toughness and higher nitrogen content, which probably makes it a higher quality resource for the detritivorous larvae. Thinning did not affect larvae population.Research highlights: Although managed forests cannot match the biodiversity value of native mixed species stands, if managed appropriately, they may provide habitat for native fauna while also allowing for forest production

Estimation of the Potential Detection of Diatom Assemblages Based on Ocean Color Radiance Anomalies in the North Sea

Over the past years, a large number of new approaches in the domain of ocean-color have been developed, leading to a variety of innovative descriptors for phytoplankton communities. One of these methods, named PHYSAT, currently allows for the qualitative detection of five main phytoplankton groups from ocean-color measurements. Even though PHYSAT products are widely used in various applications and projects, the approach is limited by the fact it identifies only dominant phytoplankton groups. This current limitation is due to the use of biomarker pigment ratios for establishing empirical relationships between in-situ information and specific ocean-color radiance anomalies in open ocean waters. However, theoretical explanations of PHYSAT suggests that it could be possible to detect more than dominance cases but move more toward phytoplanktonic assemblage detection. Thus, to evaluate the potential of PHYSAT for the detection of phytoplankton assemblages, we took advantage of the Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR) survey, collected in both the English Channel and the North Sea. The available CPR dataset contains information on diatom abundance in two large areas of the North Sea for the period 1998-2010. Using this unique dataset, recurrent diatom assemblages were retrieved based on classification of CPR samples. Six diatom assemblages were identified in-situ, each having indicators taxa or species. Once this first step was completed, the in-situ analysis was used to empirically associate the diatom assemblages with specific PHYSAT spectral anomalies. This step was facilitated by the use of previous classifications of regional radiance anomalies in terms of shape and amplitude, coupled with phenological tools. Through a matchup exercise, three CPR assemblages were associated with specific radiance anomalies. The maps of detection of these specific radiances anomalies are in close agreement with current in-situ ecological knowledge.
