Does artificial light-at-night exposure contribute to the worldwide obesity pandemic?

Abstract: This study is the first population-level study that confirms the results of laboratory research and cohort studies in which ALAN was found to be a contributing factor to excessive body mass in humans.

“…However, the proper timing of exercise and its potential added benefit of improving circadian entrainment have not been investigated thoroughly. Disruption of circadian rhythms (e.g., by shift work, social jetlag, early-morning schedules) is associated with metabolic disorders, cardiovascular disease, and cancer (6)(7)(8)(9)(10)(11). If exercise could reduce circadian disruption, then it may also improve the risk factors associated with this disruption.…”

“…Numerous studies have shown that circadian disruption is a health risk. Shift work chronically disrupts the circadian system and is also associated with increased risk of cancer, obesity, and cardiovascular disease (6)(7)(8)(9)(10)(11). Nonshift workers also experience chronic forms of circadian disruption.…”

“…Alterations in the photoperiod (known as chronodisruption) and can interfere with healthy, term pregnancies and have long-term effects on normal offspring [219,220,221]. Artificial LAN has been linked to obesity at the international level [222]. Thus, walkable neighborhoods, quality green space and opportunity for outdoor activity, coincident with lower evening screen time, is connected to sleep hygiene.…”

“…The big discussion is about the health issues of light (in particular blue light during the night) and the impact on circadian rhythm. There are studies about the increased risk of breast cancer for women and prostate cancer for men related to ALAN [14], and of a link between obesity and night shifts [15]. Another study [16] shows that even under extreme long-term viewing conditions, none of the assessed LED sources suggested cause for concern for public health.…”
