Does anthropogenic introduction of guppy fish (Poecilia reticulata) impact faunal species diversity and abundance in natural aquatic habitats? A systematic review protocol

Abstract: Background The guppy fish (Poecilia reticulata) is a tropical fish ancestrally linked to northern South America and the Caribbean. It is known to be very tolerant of and adaptable to new environments, and able to consume multiple food sources, including mosquito larvae. Consequently, guppies have been frequently introduced to non-native ecosystems to control mosquito populations, resulting in near-global distribution. Indeed, due to the increasing need for mosquito-borne disease control, guppy … Show more

“…The guppy fish ( Poecilia reticulata ) is one of the most popular tropical fish species in the world. Ancestrally linked to northern South America and Central America, it has been introduced to many countries for ornamental fishing and biological control of mosquito‐borne diseases, leading to a nearly global distribution (Deacon et al, 2011; Sasanami et al, 2021). Besides, guppy fish has been considered to be a useful animal model in multiple fields of biology (Imai et al, 2022).…”

“…Livebearing fishes are also widespread invasive species; an example is P. vivipara , which has populations in South America and introduced populations in the West Indies ( Reznick et al, 2017 ). The guppy, P. reticulata , has spread across 69 countries on six continents although many of the populations were intentionally introduced for mosquito control ( Sasanami et al, 2021 ). The closest related genus to Poecilia , Limia , does not overlap geographically with P. formosa and exists exclusively in the West Indies with several species in Hispaniola, Cuba, Grand Cayman, and Jamaica ( Reznick et al, 2017 ; Rodríguez-Silva, Torres-Pineda & Josaphat, 2020 ).…”
