Particulate matter (PM) is a hazardous airborne pollutant that encompasses all airborne particles with diameters ranging from 0.001 to 100 μm. It is composed of total suspended particles (TSPs), consisting of two main particle sizes: PM10 and PM2.5. PM poses various threats to human health because of its rapid mobility and its ability to spread over a wide area. In particular, it has long-term negative effects on such organs as the lungs and heart. China and South Korea, located in Northeast Asia, are representative of the countries at risk of PM, and their populations live with an awareness that the harms of PM go beyond physical risks. Therefore, based on previous studies, this study classifies the perceived PM risks into physical, psychological, financial, functional, and time risks. It has tried to verify the effect of this risk perception on the behavior intention of Chinese and Koreans and examine the moderating effect according to the difference in nationality. The study's conceptual model was constructed by applying Ajzen's proven theory of planned action. Utilizing AMOS 22.0 and SPSS 22.0, an analysis was performed. Following this analysis, it was determined that there was a significant causal relationship between perceived PM risk and behavioral attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control. Additionally, it was discovered that perceived PM risk significantly impacted desire and behavioral intention. These findings demonstrate that when persons are exposed to high concentrations of PM, they perceive a variety of risks that go beyond the merely physical, and they can form different attitudes depending on their nationality. This study greatly contributes to the theoretical and practical implications by presenting more diverse perspectives on PM risk.

There are some empirical studies that have revealed that quality has a positive significant influence on productivity. However, very few considered including contingency variables to bring more insights on the nature of this relationship. This study therefore attempted to investigate further the impact of quality results on productivity by including important innovations as the moderating variable to bring more insights on the nature of this relationship by collecting sample data from management employees of Tanzania Zambia Railway Authority. The model fit, validity and reliability were verified by Principal Component Analysis, Factor Analysis and Regression Analysis with the help of the Jamovi software. The results of the study present a significant positive relationship between quality results and productivity. The results also reveal that important innovations moderate the association between quality results and productivity. This study presents a theoretical contribution to literature by being the first study to empirically test the relationship between quality results and productivity with important innovations as a moderating variable. The study recommends decision makers in the organizations to always ensure that, they encourage important innovations in their organizations while paying attention to quality results. It is also hoped that this study will be replicated to other sectors and that the future studies will include other contingency variables as either moderating or mediating variables to further bring more insights on this relationship.

PurposeThis paper examines how manufacturing firms impacted by the nitrogen oxides (NOx) Budget Trading Program (NBP) strategically managed working capital to release funds for increased costs and mitigate the negative impact on firm performance.Design/methodology/approachThe study uses a panel data set including 11,302 manufacturing firm-year observations listed on the US exchanges during the period 2000–2008. The authors use Tobin's Q to proxy for firm performance, and cash holding, cash conversion cycle (CCC), days sales outstanding (DSO), days sales inventory (DSI) and days payable outstanding (DPO) for working capital management (WCM). The empirical analysis is conducted using both ordinary least squares (OLS) and propensity score matching (PSM) regressions.FindingsThe authors find that firms respond to the higher utility costs imposed by the NBP by decreasing CCC, DSO and DSI. This active WCM response partially mitigated the impact of increased compliance costs on performance for firms affected by the NBP. Results are robust in PSM regressions.Research limitations/implicationsClimate change is a global issue that has attracted increasing attention in recent years. This study shows how firms can adjust short-term financing strategies to address the costs of compliance with climate change regulation.Originality/valueThe paper contributes to the emerging literature on corporate finance and climate policy actions. The authors use the unique experimental setting of the NBP to examine the regulatory impact on corporate financial management. The authors demonstrate how firms used active WCM to mitigate the negative performance impact of regulatory compliance with the NBP, providing novel insight on the implication of compliance with climate change legislation.
