Does a skiing intervention influence the psycho‐social characteristics of the elderly?

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to assess whether a guided alpine skiing intervention lasting 12 weeks has an impact on psycho-social dimensions, measured by subjective assessments, of individuals who are 60+ years of age. A number of well-established questionnaires were used to measure well-being, life satisfaction, self-concept, health status, depression and self-efficacy. “…31 The SASES sample is characterized by above average values in psychological well-being and psychosocial variables like life satisfaction, self-concept, health status, and selfefficacy. 32 Thus, we conclude that the sample is appropriate to test long-term changes of elderly persons who are highly mentally and physically. The local ethics committee approved this study and participants gave their written informed consent.…”

“…The psychosocial characteristics of this sample at t1 were similar to the previously reported baseline values of the SASES. 32 In general, the sample of this study offers the possibility to evaluate aging-related declines in the biological, physical and cognitive domain of subjectively healthy, rarely sick and very active individuals that possess predominantly above average psychosocial characteristics in the dimensions of well-being, life satisfaction, self-concept of sports performance, body image, general depression (lower than average), self-esteem, and general self-efficacy. Hence, the sample is suited to extend knowledge on aging-related alterations in resource-rich persons in the psychosocial domain considering age by dividing the sample into two age groups.…”

“…The muscular adjustments to ski training are poorly understood despite the considerable interest in this leisure time activity (Berg et al., ; Müller et al., ). It has recently been pointed out that 3 months of recreational downhill skiing positively affects physical fitness and psychological well‐being in elderly subjects (Dela et al., ; Finkenzeller et al., ). Increased leg strength because of an enlarged cross‐section of slow‐type muscle fibers and improved whole body aerobic capacity were identified as two important contributors to the effects of skiing on fitness (Flueck et al, ; Niederseer et al, ).…”
