Does a mandibular RDP and new maxillary CD improve masticatory efficiency and quality of life in patients with a mandibular Kennedy class I arch?

Abstract: Objectives To evaluate the change in masticatory efficiency and quality of life of patients treated with mandibular Kennedy class I removable partial dentures (RPDs) and maxillary complete dentures at the Department of Dentistry of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte. Materials and methods A total of 33 Kennedy class I patients were rehabilitated with maxillary complete dentures, and mandibular RPDs were selected for this non-randomized prospective intervention study. The patients had a mean age of 5… Show more

“…Meta‐analysis of OHIP‐14 included four articles (Cakir et al, 2014; Knipfer et al, 2014; De Carvalho Dias et al, 2016; Toia et al, 2019). The overall difference between baseline and post‐treatment values was 10.52 (95% CI: [6.38; 14.66], p < .01, I 2 = 98.09%) (Figure 3a).…”

“…Moreover, the absence of edentulism rehabilitation was reported to be related to poorer nutritional status (Saarela et al, 2014(Saarela et al, , 2016. This may be related to the impact of oral rehabilitation on the masticatory efficiency (De Carvalho Dias et al, 2016;Ribeiro et al, 2017;Yamamoto & Shiga, 2018;Tôrres et al, 2019), which seems to improve in particular following implant-retained rehabilitation (Marcello-Machado et al, 2018). However, nutritional status is complex and may not be only determined by the dental status.…”

“…This assessment has the advantage of being an unbiased evaluation, which may reflect the actual status of the masticatory function. The results show that the method used was sufficiently sensitive to detect the effect of denture rehabilitation.A previous study that measured the masticatory efficiency indicated the importance of a methodology that can detect small differences between treatments [31]. By using a test gummy jelly and a fully automatic measuring device [23], we were able to quantify the effect of the new denture treatment.…”

“…In total, 3,653 potential publications were identified 17 . After exclusion of duplicate articles, incomplete studies, articles not written in English language and articles using not suitable scores to characterise Oral Function, 78 publications reported baseline or cross‐sectional data with partial or complete tooth loss (see Figure 1 for full population identification procedure) 18‐62 …”
