Documentation of time-scales for onset of natural attenuation in an aquifer treated by a crude-oil recovery system

Abstract: International audienceA pipeline transporting crude-oil broke in a nature reserve in 2009 and spilled 5100 m(3) of oil that partly reached the aquifer and formed progressively a floating oil lens. Groundwater monitoring started immediately after the spill and crude-oil recovery by dual pump-and-skim technology was operated after oil lens formation. This study aimed at documenting the implementation of redox-specific natural attenuation processes in the saturated zone and at assessing whether dissolved compound… Show more

“…This so-called stable isotope fractionation enables one to characterize contaminant transformation, especially when isotope ratios of several elements are considered simultaneously. On the basis of a quantitative understanding of KIEs, it is possible to derive the extent and rates of (bio)degradation from pollutant stable isotope fractionation. Such insights are invaluable for assessing degradation processes that occur over time scales of years to decades.…”

“…Toluene and propan-2-ol (both >99.8 purity) were purchased from Sigma-Aldrich. The aquifer sediment was from an uncontaminated quarry in the Crau aquifer plain (Ponsin et al, 2015). The fraction > 2 mm was removed by dry sieving and the material was then sieved wet on a mesh of 0.124 mm rinsed with distilled water and dried at 110°C.…”

“…For most land application methods, it can be challenging to demonstrate that the applied amendments are being consumed and enhanced degradation of the target compounds is occurring. Recent advances in diagnostic tools (DTs) including compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA), and molecular biological tools (MBTs) or biomarkers for specific PHCs have improved the ability to assess performance of remedial systems involving biodegradation of PHCs (Griebler et al, 2004;Fischer et al, 2008;Knöller et al, 2008;Batlle-Aguilar et al, 2009;Fischer et al, 2009;Morasch et al, 2011;Braeckevelt et al, 2012;Feisthauer et al, 2012;Thullner et al, 2012;Ponsin et al, 2015;Torrentó et al, 2017;Bouchard et al, 2018a;Shayan et al, 2018;Solano et al, 2018;Wei et al, 2018;Wanner et al 2019). The use of biomarkers relies on the detection and quantification of "signature" metabolites, which are specific to a transformation pathway for a given compound, and/or the detection of mRNA encoding for enzymes involved in the associated biodegradation pathways (Bombach et al, 2010;Laban et al, 2010;Liu et al, 2011;).…”
