Documentation and Virtualisation of Vernacular Cultural Heritage: The Case of Underground Wine Cellars in Atauta (Soria)

Abstract: The cultural heritage associated with rural systems is extremely valuable and is a sign of identity for cultures that are disappearing or undergoing transformation. This paper explains and illustrates the series of procedures that have been carried out to document and subsequently virtualise the ethnological site of the “El Plantío” underground wine cellars in Atauta. The ensembles of underground wine cellars are located immediately outside the village of Atauta, from which they are separated by the stream of … Show more

“…The case studies are numerous, and, at an international level, each case obviously has its specificity and the approach to each site is always different based on the geo-morphological characteristics of the artefact to be surveyed. Furthermore, it is also necessary to diversify the case studies based on the ultimate purpose of the survey itself: from the mere creation of a digital copy, to the mapping of materials and degradations for the purpose of conservative restoration, to visualization in a virtual environment through XR, up to immersivity in the site and in its context [16][17][18][19][20].…”

“…Data integration also occurs in the area of cultural heritage, examples of which can be found in papers [19,20]. The aforementioned LiDAR technology is also very often used in surveying for the acquisition of geometrical source data for cultural heritage [21,22]. An extension of the above-mentioned documentation are BIM/HBIM models, examples of which can be found in [23].…”

“…Thanks to its native functionalities that ranges from the visualisation of classified point clouds to the execution of simple geometric measurements, Potree is widely used in data sharing and visualization of digitised CH sites for management [27,39] or restoration planning purposes [40,41], enhancing its potential in team cooperation. This approach is particularly useful also for sharing information on sites located in remote areas or affected by limited accessibility [13,24,30,42] as well as for visualising the results of multisource 3D data integration [43,44]. To the best of the authors' knowledge, the literature has documented the widespread adoption of Potree as a simple 3D web viewer with simplified geometric tools [29,37,45], but its potential for storytelling and promotion to nonexpert users combining geospatial data with nongeomatics-derived information needs to be explored.…”
