Do we Need to Screen Uremic Patients for Toxoplasmosis before Kidney Transplantation?

Abstract: Background: Toxoplasmosis can cause serious complications among persons with weakened immune systems and therefore in solid organ transplant patients. Objectives: The aim of the study was to evaluate the value of screening for toxoplasma antibody titers in the donors and recipients candidate for renal transplantation in Ahvaz city, Iran. Materials and Methods: In a cross sectional study from March 2010 to April 2012, we evaluated donors and recipients who referred to our kidney transplant center in Naft Hospit… Show more

“…Th e present study found no signifi cant diff erence in herpes group virus seroprevalence between genders, which is similar to the results of many other studies conducted in hemodialysis patients [23][24][25] . However, a slightly higher CMV seroprevalence in women was noted in some studies 26 , whereas a Sudanese study has reported a slightly higher seroprevalence in men (97.9% vs. 93.3%) 27 .…”

“…A study conducted from 2005 to 2008 showed 100% EBV seropositivity in both potential renal transplant donors and transplant recipients 22 . A more recently published study (2011) showed a higher, although not statistically signifi cant diff erence in EBV IgG seroprevalence between re-transplant patients (70%) and kidney donors (52%) 23 .…”

“…Our results were consistent with recent studies. In study conducted by Beladi Mousavi, EBV IgG antibody was positive in 70% of recipients and 52% of donors but there was no statistically significant difference between males and females (p=0.94) (22). The present study found no significant difference in EBV IgG antibody seroprevalence between genders, which is similar to the result of study conducted by Beladi Mousavi among hemodialysis patients.…”
