Do Water Contamination Reports Influence Water Use Practices on Feedlot Farms and Rural Households in Southern Alberta?

Abstract: This article explores the extent to which water contamination reports influence water use practices of feedlot operators and their households in southern Alberta. An in-person survey was conducted with 33 feedlot farm families living in the Lethbridge Northern Irrigation District. The analyses reveal that there are variations in operators' knowledge of local water contamination reports and the ways in which these reports influence water use practices. “…It was observed that home water treatment devices are very popular among the respondents as a way to protect their water quality, even though most use LNID delivered treated irrigation water [26]. Corkal et al [4] reported that over 4 million Canadians rely on private water supplies, therefore, they do not know whether or not their water sources are safe or suitable for any given use, including non-health-related uses.…”

“…The farm dugouts are commonly located close to the watercourse. They are either built on a higher elevation or are diked with compacted subsoil to a level 0.6 m higher than water level [28)], to prevent seepage loss under the dike and overtopping of the dike from wave action [26], while also preventing contaminated water from entering the storage facility. The district has return flow channels to carry excess irrigation water back to the river or reservoir, drop structures built at intervals to stabilize the water flow profile, and built-in-check structure to raise and hold water at specific levels and facilitate upstream delivery [29].…”

“…Unprecedented rain events in early June (6-9) brought precipitation throughout much of southern Alberta with a total accumulation more than 220 mm (not including the spring snow melt) [4,5]. In communities such as Granum, Claresholm and Pincher Creek, the total accumulation during this period reached more than 240 mm [6] causing overland flooding, destroying businesses, homes and public facilities, and severely harming farm and livestock operations, especially CLOs [4][5][6][7][8].…”
