“…Corporate governance variables were included following [ 34 , 45 , 46 , 79 , 104 ] because resource-based theory postulates that enterprises must have superior management abilities in order to follow proactive environmental policies [ 79 ]. For instance, Liu [ 104 ] documented that companies with superior female board representation register less ecological judicial proceedings.…”

“…Additionally, institutional theory specifies that enterprises under strong institutional burden will acquire legitimacy by demonstrating good environmental performance [ 43 ]. Mungai, Ndiritu, and Rajwani [ 45 ] concluded that the implementation of voluntary environmental management systems is related to the betterment of ecological performance in Kenya. Hence, an increasing number of corporations worldwide have become conscious of the value of protecting the natural environment and have agreed to adopt an EMS for improved conformity, avoidance of environmental occurrences, and to reveal the figure of an ecologically reactive entity [ 93 ].…”

“…Environmental practices, in turn, can lead to environmental performance because a higher development of these practices makes their adoption improve their efficiency, improving environmental performance (Testa et al, 2018). Although prior empirical studies have shown both positive (Hartmann & Vachon, 2018) and no positive associations (Delmas & Toffel, 2004) between environmental practices and environmental performance, it is expected that environmental practices enhance environmental performance (Aslam, Elmagrhi, Rehman, & Ntim, 2020; Fuzi, Habidin, Janudin, & Ong, 2019; Mungai, Ndiritu, & Rajwani, 2020) because these practices help to reduce environmental hazards and water and other resources and material consumption. Environmental practices such as those related to save water and energy, reduction in emissions, employee training, and the measurement of environmental costs and savings allow companies to reduce materials, water and energy consumption, pollution emission, and waste production levels and improvements regarding a more efficient use of the resources needed to manufacture the products (Chaudhuri & Jayaram, 2019; Wagner, 2009).…”

“…However, like any other African countries, Uganda still experiences challenges of climate change mitigation due to weaknesses in climate mitigation policies, low levels of readiness, the choice of mitigation activities and level of preference attached to each sector. Sectors such as the transport sector have limited preference despite the contribution they make to climate change (Mungai et al , 2020). The transport sector represents the fastest growing source of greenhouse gas emissions.…”
