Despite the economic valuation of forest park resources has triggered a great deal of interest to the research community and park management, up to now no attention has been paid to the effect of psychological factors such as tourist satisfaction, which could potentially play a considerable role in contributing to the park resource valuation. This article attempts to fill this niche by carrying out a study on the economic valuation of the Xian-Ren-Tai National Forest Park in China, taking consideration of the tourist satisfaction. In the process, the choice experiment survey was used for data collection. Then, both conditional logit (CL) and random parameter logit models were used in parameter estimations to examine the factors that could potentially impact on the tourists’ willingness to pay. Results indicate that the tourists attach the greatest importance to the park’s natural environment and traffic conditions, and yet the level of tourists’ satisfaction on their tourism experience plays a big part in explaining the valuation results. Tourists who uphold a high level of satisfaction tend to pay more for the park attribute improvement than those with less satisfaction ones. The estimated compensating variation of the overall current park attributes has reached ¥184.95 per person per trip, of which 12.83% shall be attributable to the tourist satisfaction.

Economic valuation is an important instrument in making policies for managing coral reef resources effectively and efficiently and is able to distribute the value of benefits and costs in developing conservation areas. This study aims to determine the economic valuation of coral reef resources in TWP Gita Nada Sekotong Lombok Barat Regency. The research used the survey method with a sample size of 45 respondents determined by purposive random sampling based on the status of the respondent. Data analysis uses the Total Economic Value (TEV) approach by aggregating the value of direct benefits, indirect benefit values, value of selected benefits, value of existence benefits, and value of inheritance benefits. The results showed that the TEV of coral reef in TWP Gita Nada was Rp. 147,976,915,107.98/year or IDR 54,778,806.30/ha/year. The value of indirect benefits contributed IDR 113,523,601,904.00 per year (76.7% of the total economic value of coral reefs), while the direct benefit contributes Rp. 34,453,313,203.98 per year (23.3% of the total economic value of coral reefs).

Securing benefits for local communities from international visitors to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

This article estimates the visitation demand function for Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (KTP) in order to determine the scope for raising fees charged to international tourists in order to fund revenue-sharing schemes for local communities. International and Southern African Development Community tourists account for approximately 25% and 2% of the total number of visitors to South African national parks, with domestic visitors making up the remaining portion. Although small, the South African international tourism market is mature and accounts for a disproportionately large share (around 42%) of net revenue. To estimate visitation demand at the KTP and three other national parks, random effects Tobit Model was used. Using the estimated elasticities, the revenue-maximizing daily conservation fee was computed to be R1 131.94 (US$144.20) for KTP, which can be compared with the R180 (US$22.93) currently charged. Furthermore, the study also demonstrated that there is a possibility of raising fees at the other three parks. Sharing conservation revenue with communities surrounding parks could demonstrate the link between ecotourism and local communities’ economic development and promote a positive view of land restitution involving national parks.
