“…This pattern seems to be similar to several other surf zones around the world (Robertson & Lenanton, 1984; Gibson et al , 1993; Suda et al , 2002; Inoue et al , 2008; Selleslagh & Amara, 2008). In fact, surf zones are considered nursery area, transit routes, and feeding grounds for several species (Lasiak, 1986; Santos & Nash, 1995; Layman, 2000; McLachlan & Brown, 2006; Nakane et al , 2011), and dominated mainly by small-sized juvenile fishes (Nanami & Endo, 2007; Lima & Vieira, 2009; Mont'Alverne et al , 2012).…”

“…The surf-zone and shallow-water of estuaries of southern Brazil are mostly dominated by juveniles of Mugilidae (<50 mm total length; Vieira et al, 2010;Mont'Alverne et al, 2012). In the TRE and AC, juveniles of two species of Mugil represented c.76% of the total catch in both environments sampled.…”

“…In south Brazilian coastal areas the seasonal variations of temperature and spatial oscillation of salinity, among other factors, provide intra-and inter-annual variability that is associated with the occurrence of larger scale climatic phenomena (Garcia et al, 2004(Garcia et al, , 2012Moraes et al, 2012;Martins et al, 2015). Temperature plays an important role in seasonal migrations of some species, having a direct effect on the metabolic, reproductive, and abundance processes of the fish fauna (Mont'Alverne et al, 2012;Moraes et al, 2012;Cattani et al, 2016). Thus, recruitment of young fishes determines the composition and the seasonal variations in abundance of shallow-water species (Mont'Alverne et al, 2012;Moraes et al, 2012).…”

“…Due to this large flow and consequent reduction of salinity, along with the contribution of fine sediments in suspension that settled in the marine adjacent region (EMA) (also reported by Calliari et al ., 2003), the conditions of the region resembled a region suitable for larval settlement (similar to fishes, e.g. Mont'Alverne et al ., 2012). As settlement of blue crab recruits depends on the spawning site and the hydrodynamics of the ocean and estuary, in combination with winds, that drive the entrance of the post-larvae to the nursery areas (Etherington & Eggleston, 2003), these unusual conditions in the adjacent marine areas might be suitable for larval recruitment.…”
