Do metal mines and their runoff affect plumage color? Streak-backed Orioles in Mexico show unexpected patterns

Abstract: Metal mining causes serious ecological disturbance, due partly to heavy metal (HM) pollution that can accumulate at mining sites themselves and be dispersed downstream as runoff. Plumage coloration is important in birds’ social and ecological interactions and sensitive to environmental stressors, and several local-scale studies have found decreased carotenoid-based plumage and/or increased melanin-based plumage in wild birds exposed to HM pollution. We investigated regional-scale effects of proximity to mines … Show more

“…It is common that one of these characteristics is affected by diet while the other is not. For example, in streak‐backed orioles ( Icterus pustulatus ), the presence of dietary metals from mining runoff was associated with the size, but not the darkness, of eumelanin traits (Kiere et al, 2021). It is possible that a certain aspect of pigmentation is more plastic than another and thus, it is important to consider both size and intensity to fully understand the effect of diet.…”

“…It is not always clear why diet affects one trait but not another. In streak‐backed orioles, exposure to dietary metals had opposite effects on the size of two different eumelanin patches, which may have different signalling functions (Kiere et al, 2021). In the Chinese longsnout catfish Leiocassis longirostris diet manipulations influence eumelanin pigmentation on the tail but not on other parts of the body (Dong et al, 2011).…”

“…For river distance, we first mapped the locations of rivers, then determined whether each river segment had metal mines upstream from it (i.e. within the 'mine drainage network') using the same method and datasets as Kiere et al (2021). We only considered metal mines for this step, as we were interested in the dispersion of heavy metal pollution downstream.…”

“…However, most described effects for both coloration and FA are complex (e.g. contrasting findings in different aspects of plumage colour; Lifshitz & St Clair 2019, Kiere et al 2021, are trait-dependent (e.g. increased FA in some body parts but not others; Eeva et al 2000), and/or differ among species and populations (e.g.…”
