“…Our results indicate that the work engagement level of healthcare workers in tertiary public hospitals in China is not high; furthermore, it is lower than that in Japan, 47 Brazil 48 and Belgium, 49 and even lower than that of rural doctors in China. 50 Studies have indicated that healthcare workers in public hospitals in China experience more presenteeism, 51 are extraordinarily overworked and have lower incomes than their counterparts in Europe and the USA, 52 none of which is conducive to their level of work engagement. Thus in China, attention must be paid to the work engagement level of healthcare workers in tertiary public hospitals.…”

“…Multivariable linear regression carried out in this study has predicted demographic factors associated with presenteeism, and results revealed that higher presenteeism was predicted by more weekly overtime and >50 years of age. The results may be related to work stress, poor health, and organizational norms ( 55 ). It is noteworthy that presenteeism more likely occurred in older employees.…”

“…Worries about presenteeism are not limited to potential loss of earnings; the lack of replacement staff; concerns about the resulting burdens on patients, clients, customers, co-workers; and a potential competitive disadvantage [14]. Presenteeism occurs not only when physically or mentally unwell nurses go to work but also when their level of awareness or responsiveness is compromised or when their emotional, behavioral, or cognitive engagement is diminished [11,12,[17][18][19][20]. Nurses are 4 times more likely to exhibit presenteeism than other professions; yet, this threatens patient safety through increased falls, medication errors, and staff-to-patient disease transmission [21].…”
