Do Dogs See the Ponzo illusion?

Abstract: -While domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) play a large role in human daily lives, little is known about how they perceive the visual world. Recent research suggests that dogs may perceive certain visual illusions differently than humans. To further evaluate geometric illusion susceptibility, eight dogs were assessed on their susceptibility to the Ponzo illusion. Four experiments were conducted: 1) a presentation of the Ponzo illusion with target circles in a 'grid inducer context', 2) a re-test of Experiment 1 a… Show more

“…This mechanism could potentially account for the response of the horse to Müller-Lyer illusion and explain why dogs and horses differ in this respect. Indeed, there is good evidence that horses, like humans and non-human primates, are sensitive to depth information contained in static pictures (Guinea baboon: [34]; horse [18]) while dogs use mainly other clues to estimate distance and show little sensitivity if any to pictorial depth cues [35,36].…”

“…To our knowledge, three studies have assessed geometric illusion susceptibility in domestic dogs (Byosiere et al, 2016;Byosiere et al 2017b;Miletto Petrazzini, Bisazza, & Agrillo, 2016) (see Fig. 2 for detailed descriptions of the illusions assessed).…”
