Do Dairy Minerals Have a Positive Effect on Bone Health?

Abstract: This review aims to examine the relationship between the consumption of dairy products, mineral absorption, and bone health, and critically evaluates the methods that have been used to investigate this relationship. As people live longer and have lives that are more active in modern societies, bone health is of concern due to the possibility for the increasing incidence of bone disorders, such as osteoporosis. It has been suggested that dairy products can play a key role in bone health due to their high levels… Show more

“…The EM approach in this scenario was not applicable due to the inherent lack of range in commercial dairy samples as discussed by Burrow et al . (). Results collected from each method of analysis were compared using Sigmaplot (version 14.0; Systat Software Inc.) to carry out Bland–Altman analysis, comparing the differences between the two methods of analysis rather than their relationship as discussed by Giavarina ().…”

“…These factors are of particular concern to the infant formula and follow‐on formula industries as essential minerals such as sodium (Na), magnesium (Mg), potassium (K), phosphorus (P) and calcium (Ca) must comply with specified recommended daily intake (RDA) or minimum values (Codex Standard 72.1981). Table shows the typical reported ranges for whole bovine milk (Burrow et al …”

“…[9] However, little is known about the nonradioactive (stable) isotopes of cations, such as rubidium (Rb) and cesium (Cs), and how they interact in the food chain. [10,11] Increased mineral absorption has been observed due to the consumption of milks [12,13] independent of the high mineral concentration present. [12] Cow, buffalo, and goat milks have potentially beneficial effects on Ca absorption.…”
