Do company-owned academic patents influence firm performance? Evidence from the Italian industry

Abstract: We document that firms holding academic patents in their portfolios perform better in terms of market power since they benefit from academic knowledge spillovers generated by academic patents. On the other hand, we detect a negative effect on firms’ short-term profitability imputable to a larger fixed cost associated to the acquisition and exploitation of these patents. In terms of policy, our analysis suggests focusing on company-owned academic patents. A set of economic incentives dedicated to university–ind… Show more

“…Li et al stated that the co-ownership has a negative impact on patent commercialization: industry-academia patents are less probable to be commercialized [90]. Cerulli et al focalized their attention on the impact of academic patents on firm's performance, and they stated that there is a positive impact on market power but a lower profitability [91]. Certainly, academic scientific research is beneficial to industry because allows it to enlarge their capability to explore and develop new solutions and technological fields [92]; however, there is still dramatically limited empirical evidence on the impact of academic patents on business performance [91].…”

“…This work also adopts additional indicators to explore the characteristics of university patents, although these have not been directly associated with the basicness of research content. For instance, patent family size is generally employed to measure the value of university and non-university patents, with a larger patent family size representing greater value (Sterzi et al, 2019 ) or quality (Cerulli et al, 2021 ). Another common indicator in the literature is patent scope, which has been adopted to measure complexity (Barbieri et al, 2020 ) as it represents the distinct technological components within an invention.…”
