Do carbon emissions accelerate low-carbon innovation? Evidence from 285 Chinese prefecture-level cities

Abstract: Climate change caused by carbon emissions has a strong influence on the economy and human society. Though numerous previous studies have emphasized the importance of low-carbon innovation on curbing or mitigating carbon emissions, not much attention has been given to the reverse effect. We used a panel of 285 Chinese prefecture-level cities from 2005 to 2016 and Cooperative Patent Classification (CPC)-Y02 patents as low-carbon innovation indicators. The results show that the increasing carbon emissions acceler… Show more

“…Under the theoretical analyses and research hypotheses, we test whether industrial structure upgrading is a mediating variable. Referring to a previous method (Pan et al, 2021), this section tests the mechanism through the mediating effect model in three steps. This model is as follows: lcsditgoodbreak=α0goodbreak+α1digitgoodbreak+αj0.25emcontroljitgoodbreak+cityigoodbreak+yeartgoodbreak+εit, inditgoodbreak=β0goodbreak+β1digitgoodbreak+βj0.25emcontroljitgoodbreak+cityigoodbreak+yeartgoodbreak+εit, lcsditgoodbreak=γ0goodbreak+γ1digitgoodbreak+γ2inditgoodbreak+γj0.25emcontroljitgoodbreak+cityigoodbreak+yeartgoodbreak+εit, where Equation (2) is consistent with the direct effect model Equation (1), but many control variables are denoted by αjcontroljit in the former.…”

“…By promoting low-carbon technology innovation [2], stimulating industrial upgrading [3], attracting talent aggregation and other ways, low-carbon city policies promote cities' development [4]. At the same time, compared with non-low carbon pilot cities, the construction of low carbon cities can effectively reduce carbon emissions [5], promote the development of green economy, improve total factor productivity of enterprises [6], and promote technological innovation of enterprises [7].…”
