Do Academics Actually Collaborate in the Study of Interdisciplinary Phenomena? A Look at Half a Century of Research on Mergers and Acquisitions

Abstract: The role of scientific collaboration in academic research has rocketed across the natural and social sciences. While the causes, consequences, and social interaction patterns of scientific collaboration have been well‐established, extant empirical work focuses on entire disciplines. In this paper, we study patterns of interdisciplinary scientific collaboration using the example of research on mergers and acquisitions (M&A), a phenomenon which calls for input from numerous disciplines. We base our findings on a… Show more

“…Our qualitative data indicate that identification importantly shapes employees’ attention, which resonates with previous research depicting sensemaking and identification as interdependent (Ashforth et al, 2008; Weick et al, 2005). Post-acquisition integration is a complex and multi-faceted endeavour (Cartwright and Cooper, 1993; Mirc et al, 2017; Rouzies et al, 2019), and employees form their interpretations of ongoing change based on their subjective perception of an acquisition. They pay attention and respond to some things and disregard others (Monin et al, 2013; Vaara, 2003).…”

“…The number of collaborations between industry and universities (UIC hereafter) has increased dramatically over the last two decades (Mirc et al, ), and this trend seems to be accelerating (Scandura, ; Villani et al, ). One of the main reasons behind this mounting interest is the capacity of UIC to promote the process of technology transfer (Perkmann et al, ).…”

“…SCC is a partnership process established by at least two independent organizations in order to carry out operations more effectively, and to ensure their mutual benefit (Cao and Zhang 2011 ; Parmigiani and Mitchell 2010 ). This cooperation can include not only firms, but also governments, universities, institutes, and R&D organizations (Lee et al 2010 ; Mirc et al 2017 ; Al-Tabbaa and Ankrah 2019 ). Meanwhile, different collaborations have been established in later years within the supply chain field, focusing upon green production (Ağan et al, 2016 ).…”
