“…Upon increasing the ratio of compound to DNA, the viscosity of DNA increases, although the change is less than that of EtBr, a typical intercalator. This trend is consistent with the literature [51] and clearly indicates that the complexes bind to DNA via intercalation.…”

“…One explanation for this comes from the chelation theory effect. 59,60 The high positive charge and the strong coordination capability of the central metal ion are considered to play an observable role in improving the antimicrobial action of the HSaln ligand. This effect was seen in the current data as the highest antimicrobial potential was seen with UO 2 Saln and MnSaln complexes.…”

“…Generally, the binding of intercalative compounds to DNA can be characterized through absorption spectral titrations, where lowering in absorbance (hypochromism) and shift to longer wavelengths (red shift) were observed [5]. Hypochromic effect and red shift are the spectral features of DNA concerning its double helix structure due to the contraction of DNA in the helix axis and also from the changes in conformation of DNA [10]. From the electronic absorption spectra of the complex in FIGURE 6, it was observed the addition of increasing amounts of DNA resulted in hypochromism (16.04%)at 421 nm where a gradual decrease in molar absorptivity occurred as well as a slight red shift (3 nm).…”
