DNA droplets for intelligent and dynamical artificial cells: from the viewpoint of computation and non-equilibrium systems

Abstract: Living systems are molecular assemblies whose dynamics are maintained by non-equilibrium chemical reactions. To date, artificial cells have been studied from such physical and chemical viewpoints. This review briefly gives a perspective on using DNA droplets in constructing artificial cells. A DNA droplet is a coacervate composed of DNA nanostructures, a novel category of synthetic DNA self-assembled systems. The DNA droplets have programmability in physical properties based on DNA base sequence design. The as… Show more

“…Genetic materials like DNA or RNA can be included into artificial cells accompanied with their protein contents to assist in genetically expressive and regulatory activities. These artificial cells have synthetic DNA sequences coding for particular genes or regulatory elements (28). Such sequences are caged inside the cell to facilitate gene expression, protein synthesis or cellular signaling.…”

“…Such sequences are caged inside the cell to facilitate gene expression, protein synthesis or cellular signaling. Researchers introduce genetic material in these cells; hence, artificial cells can be manipulated to acquire particular functions which may enable them respond to external factors or undertake predetermined actions (28).…”

“…This feature is best used to construct designed-shaped nanostructures and molecular computing systems. In recent years, the programmability of DNA has been extended to the LLPS [ 5 , 6 ], attracting worldwide attention in artificial cell studies. The LLPS of DNA nanostructures was observed when branched DNA nanostructures, such as “Y-shape” and “X-shape,” were mixed in a solution.…”
