“…Hence, comparative analysis by independent contrasts (CAIC; Purvis & Rambaut 1995) was used to partition the variance among species into phylogenetically independent linear contrasts, following Felsenstein (1985). Our estimate of phylogeny for the study species was derived from the literature (Patton, Sherwood & Yang 1981;Brownell 1983;Fuller, Lee & Maxson 1984;Sarich 1985;Chaline & Graf 1988;Apfelbaum & Reig 1989;She et al 1990;Catzeflis, Anguilar & Jaegar 1992;Catzeflis et al 1995;Nikoletopoulos, Chondropoulos & Fraguedakis-Tsolis 1992;Din et al 1993;Smith & Patton 1993;Riddle 1995;Sullivan, Holsinger & Simon 1995;Watts & Baverstock 1995), and is shown in Fig. 2.…”

“…The discrimination of the phylogenetic relationships revealed within the rodent families Arvicolidae and Muridae have been based on morphological, karyological and biochemical data (Brownell, 1983;Sarich, 1985;Gill et al, 1987;Modi, 1987;Catzeflis et al, 1987Catzeflis et al, , 1989. Moreover, such studies concerning the classification and evolution within and between the families of Arvicolidae and Muridae in Greece are already known (Ondrias, 1966;Fraguedakis-Tsolis & Ondrias, 1977;Niethammer & Krapp, 1978, 1982 Fraguedakis-Tsolis et al, 445 0 1992 The Zoological Society of London 446 N .…”

“…When fast versus slowly-evolving loci are compared between rat, mouse and guinea-pig, there is no obvious bias which would indicate the preferential loss of phylogenetically labile epitopes in any one of these taxa. Brownell (1983) concluded that rodent single-copy DNA evolved at a higher rate than was found in primates, although her results point to a smaller difference than reported by, among others, Laird et al (1969) who reported that substitution rates in rodents may be up to ten times faster than in other mammals. In their review of nucleotide substitution in Rodentia, Li et al (1987) corroborated that rates of substitutions were distinctly higher when compared with primates and artiodactylans.…”
