DNA Binding Studies of 3, 5, 6-Trichloro-2-Pyridinol Pesticide Metabolite

Abstract: 3, 5, 6-Trichloro-2-pyridinol (TCP) is a stable metabolite of two major pesticides, Chlopyrifos insecticide and Triclopyr herbicide, which are widely used in the world. The potential health hazard associated with TCP is identified due to its high affinity to the DNA molecule. Therefore, in this study, the interaction of native calf thymus DNA with TCP has been investigated using spectrophotometric, circular dichroism (CD), spectrofluorometric, viscometric and voltametric techniques. It was found that TCP molec… Show more

“…Pesticides such as OCs are known to be genotoxic and induce DNA damage [119,120], either via oxidative damage [121] or direct interaction [122] with DNA. Pesticide genotoxicity is usually considered in the context of their oncogenic potential [123,124], particularly during episodes of acute exposure with mutational damage to dividing cells, such as neural stem cells (NSCs) and neural progenitor cells (NPCs).…”

“…[1][2][3] Therefore, the investigation of the interaction between DNA and small molecules is of biological importance, and especially drug molecules, have become an active and important subject in many research elds recently. DNA is quite oen the main target molecule that exists in many carcinogens, steroids and several classes of drugs.…”

“…TCP was detected in Ͼ95% of the indoor floor dust and hard-floor surface wipe, solid food, and indoor air samples in the everyday environments of preschool children in six North Carolina counties, posing a potential hazard to children (8). TCP has high affinity to the DNA molecule and can bind to the DNA groove, which might cause the metabolite to act as a potential health hazard (9).…”
