DNA Binding Properties of Two Ruthenium(III) Complexes Containing Schiff Bases Derived from Salicylaldehyde: Spectroscopic and Electrochemical Evidence of CT DNA Intercalation

Abstract: Abstract. The interaction of CT DNA by two anionic Ru(III) complexes with N-substituted salicylidenimine ligands was investigated by spectroscopic titration and cyclic voltammetry. The result gives a surprising evidence for intercalation of DNA by the negatively charged complex species containing non typical intercalating ligands with K b of order 10 4 M −1 . Na[RuCl 2 (N-R-5-X-salim) 2 ], where R represents butyl or phenyl and X = H, Cl, were characterized on the basis of elemental analysis, MALDI-TOF mass sp… Show more

“…In the case of mononuclear Ru III complex species with similar coordination core, e.g. RuCl 2 N 2 O 2 and RuN 2 O 4 , corresponding half wave‐potentials have more negative values 11,12. The presence of O‐bridging atoms in [Ru 2 L 2 Cl 2 (Et 2 NH)(H 2 O)] · H 2 O stabilizes the complex toward oxidation compared to corresponding mononuclear species.…”

“…[30][31][32] The lower values of binding constants for complexes 2 and 3 may be explained by the positions of the dppb and dpqQX ligands related to each other, which can difficult the intercalation of the complexes to DNA, mainly through the dpqQX ligand. The close values of binding constants between these complexes suggest that the charge of complex 3 does not play important role regarding interaction of the complex with DNA.…”

“…[6] Ligands and metal complexes containing various substituent groups on the salicylidene rings are extensively studied. [7][8][9] Because, these compounds and metal complexes have superior properties and are widely used in many areas. In many earlier published studies, the substitution effects on the biological activities, [10] catalysis, [11] DNA binding, [12] electronic, [13] electrochemical [14] and thermal properties were investigated.…”
