DNA binding and antibacterial properties of ternary lanthanide complexes with salicylic acid and phenanthroline

Abstract: Twelve ternary lanthanide complexes RE(sal)3phen (RE3+ = La3+, Pr3+, Nd3+, Sm3+, Eu3+, Gd3+, Tb3+, Dy3+, Ho3+, Tm3+, Yb3+, Lu3+, sal = salicylic acid, phen = phenanthroline) were prepared. Interactions between the complexes and calf thymus DNA (ct‐DNA) were investigated using UV–visible spectrophotometry, fluorescence quench experiment and viscosity measurement. Hypochromicity and red shift of the absorption spectra of complexes were observed in the presence of DNA. The enhanced emission intensity of ethidium … Show more

“…Though condensation was recorded upto 10 mM of REEs, invariably the process slowed down after 5 mM of REEs. Commonly, binding strength between DNA and complexes parallels the magnitude of the hypochromism42434445. Interestingly, the hypochromicity and red-shift emerging in the absorbance spectra advocates for strong binding of the REEs to the bDNA structures (Figs S3–S7)42434445.…”

“…Commonly, binding strength between DNA and complexes parallels the magnitude of the hypochromism42434445. Interestingly, the hypochromicity and red-shift emerging in the absorbance spectra advocates for strong binding of the REEs to the bDNA structures (Figs S3–S7)42434445. While other bDNA structures showed typical condensation by interaction with La 3+ , Gd 3+ or Dy 3+ , with increasing the concentration of LaCl 3 , US2 bDNA showed a dramatic alteration of the spectra with a characteristic positive peak at 262 nm and a negative peak at 298 nm, that is indicative of B-Z transition (Fig.…”

“…Thus, the binding mode of the [Pd(bpy)(proli-dtc)]NO 3 complex to CT-DNA is likely to be intercalation, which is aligned with the finding of UV-Vis experiment and can be further verified via viscosity measurements too. The aforementioned methods have been applied for some metal complexes [72]. BSA structure possesses three intrinsic fluorophores, namely phenylalanine, tyrosine and tryptophan.…”
