DNA barcoding of bats (Chiroptera) from the Colombian northern region

Abstract: Bats are mammals of great ecological and medical importance, which have associations with different pathogenic microorganisms. DNA barcoding is a tool that can expedite species identification using short DNA sequences. In this study, we assess the DNA barcoding methodology in bats from the Colombian Northern region, specifically in the Córdoba department. Cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene sequences of nine bat species were typified, and their comparison with other Neotropic samples revealed that this mar… Show more

“…Even among birds, a group which comprises more readily phenotypically discernible species, there may be twice as many evolutionarily distinct species than re ected by traditional morphometrics (Barrowclough et al, 2016). Globally, DNA barcoding studies have helped re ne species boundaries across both bats (Benítez et al, 2021;Clare et al, 2007Clare et al, , 2011; Kruskop et al, 2012) and birds (Chaves et al, 2015;Kerr et al, 2009a;Kerr et al, 2009b;Saitoh et al, 2015), although these studies have been skewed predominantly towards the eastern Palaearctic, Nearctic, and especially the Neotropics. But despite several studies demonstrating the e cacy of this molecular tool, few have employed it on a broad geographic scale.…”
