DNA barcoding for wood identification: global review of the last decade and future perspective

Abstract: DNA barcoding technology has emerged as one of the most promising tools available to identify timber at the species level, contributing to the monitoring of the timber trade and the conservation of forestry sources. This paper reviews the progress, challenges, and existing problems in the development of DNA barcoding for wood identification in the last ten years. There is a focus on the optimization of DNA extraction methods for processed or ancient wood, the strategy of screening high-resolution DNA barcodes … Show more

“…For the reliable identification of select species, visual learning, chemical analysis, and genetics have been employed 8 . Examples include machine vision 15 , near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) 12 , direct analysis in real time time-of-flight mass spectrometry (DART TOFMS) 3 , and DNA barcoding 16 . Most of these techniques are in their early stages of development with limited application, but with recognized potential to develop 1 .…”

“…are some of the microscopic features that form a framework in timber identification (W heeler and Baas, 1998). As mentioned by Jiao (2020), DNA-based identification of timber is an emerging tool in species identification, but one drawback is that very inconsequential amount of timber tissue contains DNA.…”
