DNA Analysis Detects Different Mislabeling Trend by Country in European Cod Fillets

Abstract: Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua, is a highly appreciated fish in European seafood markets and is one of the most substituted fish species in the world. Fraud have been detected in European markets in the last decade, finding different substitute species sold as G. morhua or Atlantic cod on the label. In this study, we analyzed 252 samples of fresh and frozen cod fillets sold in Germany, the Netherlands, and France using DNA barcoding. Different trends were found in different countries: while the level of mislabelin… Show more

“…Mislabeled products associated with Atlantic cod and haddock were expected to be reported more because those two fishes were repeatedly caught in a mixed fishery [29]. Haddock was also listed as the frequently replaced cod species in the IUCN database [7,8]. Most cod products were labeled only "cod" without representing a specific species.…”

“…Fish mislabeling is a global issue, affecting both food security and biodiversity conservation (Staffen et al 2017). This practice, which has been identified in several countries (Feldmann et al 2021), involves the intentional or unintentional misidentification of fish sold in markets or restaurants (Galimberti et al 2013). Intentional mislabeling often involves the fraudulent sale of fish branded as having a higher economic or cultural value (Donlan and Luque 2018).…”

“…Atlantic cod ( Gadus morhua ) is characterized by an excellent source of quality proteins, polyunsaturated fat and essential micronutrients, 1 and represents one of the most popular species in the Gadidae family. However, due to declining stocks in most source areas of the world, indistinguishable features for processed products, and poor transparency in the global supply chain, species adulteration frequently occurs with Atlantic cod 2‐4 . Moreover, a great variety of species have been identified in Atlantic cod products, including Pacific cod ( G. macrocephalus ), 2 Alaska pollock ( Theragra chalcogramma ), 5 saithe ( Pollachius virens ), 6 European hake ( Merluccius merluccius ), 7 Greenland halibut ( Reinhardtius hippoglossoides ), 3 anglerfish ( Lophius litulon ), 8 oilfish ( Ruvettus pretiosus , Lepidocybium flavobrunneum ) 9 and even pufferfish ( Lagochephalus spp.)…”
