Division of Domestic Work: Is There Adjustment Between Partners when One is Unemployed?

Abstract: Coming back to the main models of division of work within the couple, the aim of this article is to analyze the possible transfers of domestic chores between partners facing an external shock. We test it by studying the allocation of domestic time on couples facing unemployment on the French time-use survey. Are domestic chores transferable between partners? Controlled for many covariates, bivariate tobit regressions on indicators of time, variety and number of activities show that domestic tasks performed by … Show more

“…Spouses' time allocations may be related to a preference for joint leisure or to scheduling around childcare activities: couples may coordinate their decisions in order to enjoy leisure time together, but children reduce these opportunities (Hamermesh 2002). An exogenous income loss such as unemployment of one spouse may lead to a reallocation of domestic tasks among family members (Solaz 2005). Choices of leisure versus work are affected by weather: we do more work on rainy days in order to have more time for leisure on sunny days (Connolly 2008).…”

“…Recourse to domestic help has no impact on the father's parental time, but increases that of the mother by 23 min: we observe a substitution effect between women's domestic and parental tasks. Whereas for men, hired help has no significant impact on their domestic tasks either (Solaz 2005), for women, hired help for household tasks frees time, which may then be devoted mainly to the children. Women opt out of less important production tasks (housecleaning) to spend greater amounts of total home time with their children.…”
