Abstract: The Duke Emmanuel Philibert of Savoy (1528-1580) was a key figure in bringing the Italian wars to an end and also in arranging the signing of the Treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis. His duchy, occupied by France beginning in 1536, was given back to him in 1559 with the exception of various strongholds that remained in French and Spanish hands until several years after the treaty.
