Diversity, stability, and evolvability in models of early evolution

Abstract: Based on the RNA world hypothesis we outline a possible evolutionary route from infrabiological systems to early protocells. To assess the scientific merits of the different models of prebiotic evolution and to suggest directions for future research we investigate the diversity maintaining ability, evolutionary/ecological stability and evolvability criteria of existing RNA world model systems for the origin of life. We conclude that neither of the studied systems satisfies all of the above criteria, although s… Show more

“…Being autocatalytic is necessary but not sufficient for evolution. There has been much discussion about what additional ingredients are needed for evolvability [28][29][30][31], but several scientists have suspected that the accretion of complexity is possible when chemical reaction systems contain multiple interacting autocatalytic motifs that can be triggered sequentially by rare, stochastic events [26,[32][33][34]. However, we still lack a clear understanding of how stoichiometrically autocatalytic motifs are organized in real chemical reaction networks and whether that organization allows for gradual, adaptive complexification.…”

“…However, Maynard Smith [19] raised important objection that hypercycles are vulnerable to parasites in homogeneous solutions [22,25,[30][31][32][33]. It has been shown, that while such system is able to maintain its diversity, it is evolutionary and ecologically unstable and its evolvability is limited [34,35]. Boerlijst and Hogeweg were the first to show that the problem of negative impact of parasites can be reduced by considering spatially organized systems [22].…”
