Abstract. Navia ZI, Adnan, Harmawan T, Suwardi AB. 2022. Ethnobotanical study of wild medicinal plants in Serbajadi protected forest of East Aceh District, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 4959-4970. The Serbajadi protected forest of East Aceh District has high biodiversity including medicinal plants which have been utilized by the community as traditional medicine. However, their knowledge of ethnobotanical uses of medicinal plants is threatened due to the lack of written records and the rapid socio-cultural changes as a consequence of economic development. Therefore, this study aims to study wild medicinal plants and traditional knowledge in the Serbajadi protected forest, East Aceh District, Indonesia. This study used a combination of data collection methods, namely field surveys, plant collections, and community interviews. The snowball sampling technique was used to select 320 interviewees. The results showed that local people use 88 different wild medicinal plant species from 78 genera and 46 families to treat 32 different diseases. The most common ailments to cure are fever, cough, and diarrhea. Ageratum conyzoides is the most known medicinal plant species with a relative frequency citation index of 0.97, while Acorus calamus is the most commonly used medicinal plant in the local community with a use value index of 0.99. Furthermore, locals identified leaves (75%) as the most commonly used plant part and decoction (55%) as the most common method of administering traditional medicine. The elders know more about medicinal plants than the younger generation, indicating that traditional knowledge is eroding as generations pass. In order to ensure the sustainability of medicinal plants and the preservation of traditional knowledge in the future, the initiative to preserve medicinal plants must be increased, particularly among the younger generation.

Revitalization of local health traditions (RLHT) has become an inevitable aspect of human wellbeing in the post COVID era. An ethnobotanical survey was carried out to collect information on local health traditions and cultural reflections associate with the age old use of wild edible fruits (WEFs) from common plants in Melur Region of Madurai district, TamilNadu, India as the habit of consuming WEFs is quite common among people in this region and has not been completely abandoned in particular among the age old people. Information presented in this paper has been gathered from local people using an integrated approach of botanical collections, group discussions and interviews with questionnaires during the period from Apr 2021 to Mar 2022. As much as 29 informants were interviewed, among the informants 6 were local health-care practitioners (Vidiyars). Studies on the use of WEFs from common plants in Melur resulted in collection and documentation of information on a total of 34 ethnomedicinal plant species distributed across 20 families. Medicinal plants used by local people are listed with scientific name, family, local name, plant part(s) used, mode of consumption and preparation and medicinal uses. Data collected during the study clearly indicates that fresh parts of the plant (Fruit (Ripe/ Unripe)) were more preferred in general for the preparation of medicinal formulations by the local health practitioners. Documented ethnomedicinal plants were mostly used to cure long term complications associated with diabetics, gastrointestinal disorders, skin diseases, poison bites and nervous disorders. Howsoever, results of this study is clear record to the claim that the local people still depend on medicinal plants to overcome situations like COVID pandemic as fruits from most of the plants documented serve as natural source of immune boosters. Further, in-depth studies (both In-silico and Pre Clinical trials) are expected to bring to limelight the hidden quantum of bioactive compounds in the fruits these medicinal plants and their therapeutic potential. Mangrove ecosystem has a strategic function as a buffer for coastal areas, marine conservation, mitigates climate change and global warming. Bangka Belitung is an archipelagic province with many coastal areas, including mangrove ecosystems. This study aims to determine the quality of the mangrove ecosystem by analyzing the structure, composition, and health index of mangroves in the mangrove forest ecosystem in Baskara Bakti Village, Central Bangka Regency. Data were collected through observations at several sampling points used to analyze species composition, vegetation community structure, and environmental physicochemical conditions using stratified random sampling with an observation plot size of 10 m x 10 m and canopy cover determination using the hemispherical photography method. The study results show that the composition of mangrove vegetation in the study area consisted of 5 true mangrove species and 6 associated mangrove species. Rhizophora apiculata is the species with the highest Important Value Index of 91.87%. The mangrove community showed a good health condition with an average value of 50.41%. Environmental parameters that directly influence the mangrove forest ecosystem include temperature, water pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), and salinity. Planting and enrichment of mangrove species need to conserve sustainable mangrove ecosystems.
