Diversity of the Chemical Profile and Biological Activity of Capsicum annuum L. Extracts in Relation to Their Lipophilicity

Abstract: Ethanol extracts of two types of pepper (sweet and hot) were separated into fractions with increasing lipophilicity. After drying the extracts and fractions, their chemical composition, anti-radical activity in the DPPH radical system, and cytotoxic activity against PC-3 and HTC-116 cells were determined. A detailed qualitative analysis of the fractions was performed with the LC-QTOF-MS method. It was found that the chemical composition of pepper fractions did not always reflect their biological activity. The … Show more

“…214 C. annuum extracts eluted with 40% methanol yielded the highest amounts of total phenols and total flavonoids, respectively, compared to other lipophilic fractions. 215 Extractable color in the range of 36.9−144.2 ASTA color units and capsaicin in the range of 999−47,814 SHU, respectively, were extracted using solvent extraction in six C. annuum cultivars. 216 Higher concentrations of ethanol (up to 85%) were able to extract higher % yield of carotenoids, vitamin C, and phenolic compounds from C. baccatum (Bishop's Crown Pepper).…”

“…The human colorectal cancer HCT 116 cell line and the prostate cancer PC-3 line were used for these analyses. The mouse fibroblast L929 line was used as a normal cell model, which is recommended for cytotoxicity studies [26,27]. The results are summarized in Figure 1.…”

“…Sea buckthorn extracts and its polyphenols may be potentiating their anticancer activity. Polyphenols from diet have previously been documented to interfere with many of the biochemical pathways involved in cancer progression [70]. Furthermore, polyphenols may act as an immune system booster and help protect living cells from ROS damage.…”
