Wstęp. Rickettsia to rodzaj obligatoryjnie wewnątrzkomórkowych i Gram-ujemnych bakterii, odpowiedzialnych za wywoływanie ostrych chorób gorączkowych, nazywanych riketsjozami. W obrębie rodzaju wyróżniono cztery grupy: grupę gorączek plamistych, durów wysypkowych, przejściową oraz pierwotną. Większość bakterii jest przenoszona przez różne gatunki stawonogów. Cel pracy. Celem opracowania jest podsumowanie dotychczasowej wiedzy dotyczącej występowania bakterii z rodzaju Rickettsia w środowisku Polski. W artykule skupiono się na zestawieniu wyników badań przeprowadzonych przez polskich badaczy dotyczących występowania bakterii u różnych gatunków kleszczy oraz rezultatów badań seroepidemiologicznych, a także przedstawiono większość rozpoznanych gatunków riketsji wraz z ich chorobotwórczością i podziałem na grupy. Dyskusja. W Polsce rocznie odnotowywanych jest kilka przypadków zachorowań, głównie na riketsjozy z grupy gorączek plamistych. Większość zdiagnozowanych przypadków ma charakter importowany. W literaturze opisano przypadki TIBOLA (ang. Tick-borne lymphadenopathy) oraz afrykańskiej gorączki odkleszczowej. W Polsce osoby, u których wykryto obecność specyficznych przeciwciał anty-Rickettsia spp., stanowią nawet powyżej 50% badanych, w szczególności wśród grup zawodowo narażonych na zakażenie patogenami odkleszczowymi. Odsetek zakażonych Rickettsia spp. kleszczy w Polsce waha się od 0 do nawet ponad 60% badanych osobników, w zależności od gatunku. Wnioski. Riketsje stanowią istotny problem zdrowia publicznego, a także są zaliczane do biologicznych czynników szkodliwych zawodowo. Prace nad zidentyfikowaniem nowych potencjalnych wektorów tych patogenów oraz ich chorobotwórczości mają szczególne znaczenie dla szybkiej diagnostyki i skutecznej profilaktyki zachorowań na riketsjozy.
