Diversity of Some Gene Frequencies in European and Asian Populations

Abstract: Genetic variation at the phosphoglucomutase-1 (PGM) and acid phosphatase (ACP) loci, in 160 and 120 European and Asian populations, respectively, is described by spatial autocorrelation statistics and directional variograms. Short-distance patterns of gene frequencies correspond to those predicted by models of isolation by distance, but long-range differentiation of populations is observed as well. A possible role of climatic selection in maintaining the PGM polymorphism is supported by the north-south orienta… Show more

“…On the other hand, no significant association has been observed in other populations (Hernandez et al, 1990), suggesting some effects of genetic background and/or environmental conditions. In this context, the observation of Farabegoli and Barbujani (1990) that the mean axis of the gradient for ACP1 alleles follows a NE-SW direction, paralleling the gradient observed for ADA locus, is of interest.…”

“…Autocorrelation coefficients were computed within five arbitrary distance classes (Table 3). In the literature, there are spatial autocorrelation analyses whose coefficients are computed in distance classes from 4 ( Barbujani and Pigliucci, 1989;Pigliucci and Barbujani, 1991) to higher numbers, such as 7 (Barbujani and Sokal, 1991), 10 (Epperson and Allard, 1989), 15 (Sokal et al, 1989a), and 24 (Farabegoli and Barbujani, 1990). The plot of autocorrelation coefficients vs. distance classes is a correlogram.…”
