Diversity of Secondary Metabolites in Roots from Conium maculatum L.

Abstract: Background: Conium maculatum is known as highly toxic plant, due to piperidine alkaloids present in the aerial parts. In a first attempt, in various tap root samples, however, alkaloids could not be detected. The present study describes active compounds in the tap roots from 16 populations harvested at maturity. The compounds were extracted with dichloromethane from root pieces of single plants and analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Ten bioactive compounds were evaluated: five furocoumarins, two… Show more

“…However, these plants are very toxic (Conium maculatum, colloquially known as hemlock, poison hemlock or wild hemlock, is a highly poisonous biennial herbaceous flowering plant in the carrot family Apiaceae, native to Europe and North Africa) and have many side effects. The optimal dosage form for poisonous plants is an alcohol tincture with a drip dosing regimen (Chizzola and Lohwasser 2020).…”

“…To sum up, coumarins have very important medical and commercial value in medicinal plants. The amount of high-value secondary metabolites determines the market price of medicinal materials (Chizzola and Lohwasser 2020 ). Therefore, improving the quality of medicinal plants by technical means is a very meaningful scientific research task.…”
