Diversity of Moesziomyces (Ustilaginales, Ustilaginomycotina) on Echinochloa and Leersia (Poaceae)

Abstract: A combined ecological, morphological, and molecular approach was used to examine 26 herbarium specimens and eight strains of Moesziomyces. The phylogenetic analysis resolved eight well-supported clades, of which three contained type specimens of known species of Moesziomyces. One clade contained two specimens that produced a teleomorph in the flowers of Echinochloakimberleyensis in Australia. The name Moesziomyceskimberleyensis is proposed for this smut fungus. Another clade contained specimens that produced s… Show more

“…Moesziomyces, belongs to the phylum Basidiomycota, is primarily distributed in wild larval samples (UF, Z, S), and is rarely detected in laboratory samples. This yeast genus was initially isolated from sediment in Lake Vanda, Antarctica ( Li et al, 2019 ) and later frequently isolated from the surface of plant leaves, serving as a natural source for plant resistance against powdery mildew ( Liu et al, 2019 ). Trichosporon exhibit relatively high abundance in artificial feed (CK), with a relative abundance similarly to Wickerhamomyces in the wild Urticafissa (UF) group.…”

“…New parasitic species published in the Basidiomycota include the rust Quasipucciniastrum agrimoniae , a biotrophic parasite of agrimony ( Agrimonia ), a plant used in traditional medicines (Qi, Cai, & Zhao, 2019) and Neopuccinia bursa from Protium heptaphyllum in Brazil, a tree of local importance as a source of resin, food, medicine, and wood (Martins, Sakuragui, Hennen, & Carvalho, 2019). A new smut, Moesziomyces kimberleyensis , was found on inflorescences of Echinochloa kimberleyensis , an endemic Australian grass of potential conservation concern (Li, Shivas, Li, & Cai, 2019). Six novel yeast‐like Exobasidiomycetes in the genera Entyloma, Golubevia, and Jamesdicksonia were discovered causing white haze post‐harvest disease on apples (Richter, Yurkov, Boekhout, & Stadler, 2019).…”
