Abstract: Lipid-based survival mechanisms allow microalgae to occupy wide geographical ranges and survive abiotic stress. The protist Symbiodiniaceae are globally distributed from temperate to tropical environments, and establish mutualisms with numerous hosts, including cnidarians.
