Diversity of Harbinger-like Transposons in Teleost Fish Genomes

Abstract: Harbinger elements are DNA transposons that are widespread from plants to vertebrates but absent from mammalian genomes. Among vertebrates, teleost fish are the clade presenting not only the largest number of species but also the highest diversity of transposable elements, both quantitatively and qualitatively, making them a very attractive group to investigate the evolution of mobile sequences. We studied Harbinger DNA transposons and the distantly related ISL2EU elements in fish, focusing on representative t… Show more

“…PIF-Harbinger is a TE superfamily that is abundant in the genomes of plants and animals (Markova et al 2022). The intact PIF-Harbinger TE carries two open reading frames (ORFs): the rst ORF encodes a transposase containing a DDE endonuclease motif, a metal ion vital for catalyzing DNA cleavage and strand transfer at the insertion site, and the second ORF encodes a DNA-binding protein with a conservative Myb/SANT-like domain (Etchegaray et al 2022). In the current study, the genomes of E. sinensis and S. paramamosain contained a large amount of PIF-Harbinger superfamily TEs, and the expression of PIF-Harbingers in the gill tissue of E. sinensis responded to uctuations under air exposure stress conditions.…”
