Diversity of diatrypaceous fungi associated with grapevine canker diseases in California

Abstract: Eutypa lata is the most common diatrypaceous fungus in grapevine cankers. This study was undertaken to determine the presence and diversity of other members of the Diatrypaceae in grapevines in California. We isolated into pure culture 11 species of Diatrypaceae from the wood of diseased grapevines including Cryptosphaeria pullmanensis, Cryptovalsa ampelina, Diatrype oregonensis, D. stigma, D. whitmanensis, Diatrype sp., Diatrypella verrucaeformis and four putative species of Eutypella. Species were identified… Show more

“…Sequence data is lacking for Echinomyces, Leptoperidia, Peroneutypa and Quaternaria. Recent papers with sequence data providing backbone trees are Carmaran et al (2006) and Trouillas et al (2010) as well as Liu et al (2015) in which a new species of Diatrype from palms was introduced. In the present account we provide a description and reference specimen (sensu Ariyawansa et al 2014) for the generic type, Diatrype disciformis (Hoffm.)…”

“…Recent research has established that, besides E. lata , some other species also in the family Diatrypaceae likewise cause trunk diseases of grapevine. These are Eutypa leptoplaca , Cryptovalsa ampelina , Cryptosphaeria pullmanensis , and some further species in the genera Diatrype , Diatrypella and Eutypa [8,9]. Most of these fungi grow slowly in the vine wood, and foliar symptoms do not appear until several years after the onset of infection, so that by the time the symptoms become visible the fungi are well-established [2,6,10].…”
