Diversity of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L., Fabaceae) landraces in parts of southern and eastern Ethiopia

Abstract: The study identified the status of landrace (farmers' variety) diversity of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) in a participatory field research conducted in selected zones southern and eastern Ethiopia. Data were collected by interviewing common bean growers, direct field observations and ethnobotanical information retrieval. Germplasm accessions (169) and voucher specimens (39) of common bean were collected at locations ranging from 1500-2500m a.s.l. These were sorted into 133(78.7%) landraces and 36(21.3%)… Show more

“…This situation may contribute to under or over-estimation of the diversity within species [40,25,41,9]. To avoid redundancies and optimize the efficient conservation and sustainable use of pigeonpea diversity, it is important to conduct morphological and molecular characterizations to avoid redundancies and establish equivalence between the local names [28,42,43].…”

“…The materials used in this study were 24 common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) landraces ( Table 1). The landraces were collected from different geographic locations of Oromia and Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples (SNNP) regions of Ethiopia (Bareke et al 2018).…”

“…Wide-ranging shapes of common bean seeds grown in many parts of continent occupy an important part of the diversity of agricultural crops (Ivanovska et al 2012). The food, agricultural and ecological values of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) are tremendous (Bareke et al 2018). It is one of the most important and widely distributed pulses that have the broadest range of genetic resources and its grain used to direct human consumption (Singh 1999;Sperotto and Ricachenevsky 2017).…”
