Diversity of Capitalisms in Latin America

Abstract: Is there a unique mode of development in Latin America, or a great diversity, each country being different from others? Between these two extreme scientific positions, Ilán Bizberg explores another perspective, and builds and uses a typology distinguishing various modes of development, i.e. various capitalisms. An inspiring and innovative demonstration, based on a very solid knowledge both of Latin America, and of economical and sociological theories, including the French Regulation School."-Michel Wieviorka, P… Show more

“…Capitalist varieties applied to emerging countries could not be simply a mixing of the main varieties present in Hall and Soskice (2001). Several authors have contributed to this effort over the last decade (Schneider, 2009;Nölke & Vliegenthart, 2009;Bohle & Greskovits, 2012;Hundt & Uttam, 2017;Rougier & Combarnous, 2017;Moore, 2018;Bizberg, 2018).…”

“…The traditional Varieties of Capitalism-juxtaposition of the German coordinated market economy (CME) and the US liberal market economy (LME) has given way to a range of new models focusing on Latin America, Eastern Europe and Asia. Next to the Eurozone, emerging markets have become the most vibrant field of study in Comparative Capitalism, documented by a number of edited volumes and monographs (Bohle and Greskovits 2012, Walter and Zhang 2012, Becker 2013, Schneider 2013, Benney 2014, Musacchio and Lazzarini 2014, Witt and Redding 2014, Rougier and Combarnous 2017, Demirbag and Wood 2018, Vasileva-Dienes and Schmidt 2019, Bizberg 2019) and accompanied by a comprehensive review essay (Feldmann 2019).…”

“…This makes an historical approach a strong complement to Social Structure of Accumulation theory which compares varieties of capitalism across both historical time (see: Kotz, 2015;Talbot, 2011) and present space (see : Bizberg, 2019;Menz, 2017a) where institutions' development and are contingent upon particular capital-labour relations (Hornstein, 2021;Rey-Araújo, 2019) e.g., the balance of class forces (Gramsci, 2018;Hall, 1989). This project's use of Social Structure of Accumulation theory takes the form of an "extended case study" (Geschiere, 2001) by looking over the long term how the changing balance of class forces comes to bear on the rise of right-wing populism.…”

“…To situate organic crisis and right-wing populism in the particular conflicts and conditions of capitalist accumulation in Central America, I draw from Social Structure of Accumulation theory, one of the institutionalist political economy theories that came out of the neo-Gramscian break with structuralist Marxism. Social Structure of Accumulation theory seeks to explain the cycles of relative stability and crisis which historically characterize the capitalist system (Labrouse & Mitchell, 2017;Lacher, 2008) and compare varieties of capitalism across both historical time (see: Kotz, 2015b;Talbot, 2011;Arrighi, 1993) and present space (see: Bizberg, 2019;Menz, 2017a) as well as across scales (Jonsson, 1993). To do this, SSA theory looks at the "balance of class forces" (Gramsci, 2018), e.g.…”
