“…Our result is opposite with it, and the reason probably is that the correlation between dsr abundance and metals is metal type dependent. As for sulfur oxidation genes, it is well known that metals and S always coexist in extreme environments 35 , like sulfide minerals ore or acid mine drainage (AMD), which can explain the correlation between sulfur oxidation genes and metals.…”

“…While the neutral pH optimum for thiobacilli between 6 and 8 is consistent with the soil pH of the 6‐year‐old site, acidithiobacilli are obligate acidiphiles reported from acidic mine drainage waters, biofilms or mine sediments (Johnson et al ., 2001; Johnson & Hallberg, 2003; Macalady et al ., 2007) with pH between 0 and 4. In such highly acidic environments, A. ferrooxidans was reported to dominate bacterial communities, with abundances ranging up to 70% (Gonzalez‐Toril et al ., 2003; Mendez et al ., 2008; Yang et al ., 2008). This study is the first report on A. ferrooxidans being highly abundant in an apparently neutral pH and indicates the probable existence of pH gradients associated with acidic microniches (Robertson & Kuenen, 2006).…”

“…The low microbial diversity according to SSCP analysis was consistent with the results of previous work in a similar environment. Yang et al (2008) have used ARDRA (amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis) analysis to characterize the diversity and community structure of Acide Mine drainage. They showed that pH and polluant concentrations exert a considerable influence on the phylogenetic diversity of microbial communities in mining sites.…”

“…and Ralstonia pickettii. These bacteria are known for their distinctive ability to live in low-nutrient environments, a characteristic of most heavily metalcontaminated sites (Yang et al, 2008).…”
