Diversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in soils of yam (Dioscoreaspp.) cropping systems in four agroecologies of Nigeria

Abstract: The diversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi in soils under a yam cropping system in four agroecologies of Nigeria was investigated. Soil samples were collected from yam fields at Onne (humid forest, high rainfall area), Ibadan (derived savanna), Abuja (Guinea savanna) and Ubiaja (humid forest, medium rainfall area). Soil characteristics, AM fungi species, spore abundance, Shannon diversity index, species richness and evenness were determined. A total of 31 AM fungi species was isolated from the four agr… Show more

“…Acaulospora scrobiculata has been considered a generalist in forest environments (Gao and Guo 2010;Silva et al 2006). Glomus geosporum is commonly found in any environment, even in intensively managed arable lands (Dare et al 2013;FrankeSnyder et al 2001;Landwehr et al 2002;Oehl et al 2003;Turrini et al 2010;Wang et al 2008;Wilde et al 2009). The dominance of these species in several different environments indicates high plasticity and high adaptation to different impacts of biotic or abiotic origin (Zangaro and Moreira 2010).…”

“…The clean spores were mesh sieved and washed several times with distilled water before being transferred into water in a clean Petri-dish. The AMF spores were counted under a stereomicroscope ( Dare et al 2013 ).…”

“…In most cases (e.g. [22]) the inoculum was soil-based, where a suitable trap crop is used to generate AMF propagules, which are produced in the soil. The soil is then used as inoculant.…”
