Diversity of allergens causing occupational asthma among cereal workers as demonstrated by exposure procedures

Abstract: Besides cereals, other allergens such as enzymes, leguminous, egg and storage mites can be the causative agents of occupational asthma among cereal workers. Sensitization to different allergens in the different jobs is very likely due to differences in exposure.

“…In addition, other professions, particularly in the food industry, like poultry and ham workers, can also develop sensitization and respiratory symptoms due to storage mites [163]. IgE-mediated allergy to storage mites has been demonstrated by skin prick testing and measurements of allergen-specific IgE, and confirmed by specific inhalation challenges [164, 165]. The occurrence of nasal symptoms has been found to precede the development of lower airway symptoms [160].…”

“…Nine proteins were recognised, with molecular weights ranging from 54.5 to 14.9 kDa (15). Reactivity to soybean flour was also observed in a study performed by Alvarez et al (24) in 9 of 21 cereal workers. Therefore, the allergens involved in occupational asthma may differ from the causative agents in the Barcelona epidemics.…”
