The aim of this study was to provide a first-hand water quality assessment of the River Nyong estuary, Southern Atlantic coast of Cameroon. Environmental variables and phytoplankton communities were monitored at four surface stations in the estuary for 2 season cycles from 2014 to 2015. A total of 208 species of phytoplankton, belonging to five (5) groups of microalgae, were identified. The ShannonWeaver diversity index showed a qualitative seasonal difference in composition of the phytoplankton community. Dissolved nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) values showed seasonal fluctuations throughout the sampling period. A ratio appeared high (42.78) in the rainy season and low (5.89) in the dry season, two values corresponding to the change in specific richness (high and low respectively during the major rainy season and the small dry season). The Water Quality Index (WQI) showed that water quality fluctuates from good to bad, in conjunction with biological indicators (Shannon-Weaver, Abundance and Specific richness).

Influence of Anthropogenic Pollution on the Abundance Dynamics of Some Freshwater Invertebrates in the Coastal Area of Cameroon

The abundance dynamic of some freshwater invertebrates in relation with the abiotic factors of the medium was studied from March 2013 to March 2014 on the main streams of the Wouri and Sanaga basins. Individuals of Copepoda, Atyidae, Chironomidae and Physidae were collected, identified and counted. Samplings were carried out monthly; meanwhile measurements of the environmental variables were taken. Results of the physico-chemical analyses revealed that water of the Sanaga basin is globally well oxygenated (77% -92%) and faintly mineralized (14 -107 µS/cm), excepted in the stations receiving household pollutants. Inversely, in the Wouri basin, waters are hypoxic with high content of organic matters (27.79 ± 9.43 mg/L). During rainy season (June-September), there is a dilution-dispersion of the organic matter due to stormwaters. Concerning biological analyses, the families of Physidae and Chironomidae were more abundant in urban stations than in stations situated in suburban area, especially during low water level period, showing that they are well adapted to anthropogenic and organic pollutions. The hypoxic conditions of urban waterways do not favor the proliferation of sensitive taxa such as Atyidae and Copepoda. These taxa preferred well oxygenated waters with rapid flow, and are more abundant during rainy season in stations located in suburban area or which are less subjected to anthropogenic disturbances.

A B S T R A C TThe changes in the physicochemical of waters in the lake ecosystem caused by seasonal variation, anthropogenic and industrial wastes impact the gastropod community. This study aimed to determine the physicochemical parameter of waters, community structure and distribution of gastropod, and the correlation between those two in the dry and rainy seasons. We conducted this research in the lake of Situ Gintung located in Tangerang Selatan, Banten, Indonesia during the dry season (May to August 2015) and the rainy season (February to April 2016). Statistical analysis showed the physicochemical parameter of waters in both seasons has no different, while the gastropod showed a slight difference in occurrence based on the season, in which rainy season had the highest occurrence. Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) suggested that gastropods occurrence were affected by the light intensity in the rainy season and the temperature in the dry season.
